Job #3

Effaced: "The intellectual part of his nature was already effaced" (3)

Keen: "Keen poignant agonies seemed to shoot form his neck downward through every fiber of his body and limbs" (3)

Vulgar: "Evidently this was no vulgar assassin" (1)

Ineffectually: "The two sentinels fired again, independently and ineffectually." (3)

Perilous: "No adventure to perilous for him to undertake" (2)
Job #4

Why do you think Bierce had Farquhar dream about his escape?

"Death is a dignitary who when he comes announced is to be received with formal manifestations of respect, even by those most familiar with him." (one of the issues with using an android tablet to read this story is that finding the actual chapter proves difficult, what I can tell you is that this specific quote is found at the end of the second chapter)

Most of the story is laced with foreshadowing and even though it is not obvious this is no exception.  When I first read the quote I found it interesting but it didn't stand out in any way UNTIL I got to the end of the story.  When you get to the end of the story it becomes clear this quote holds a great deal of significance.
The troops take their job very seriously and prepare for the death of Farquhar in an almost ritualistic fashion.  A large part of this is their quiet tones used when talking.  This is to show respect to the man they have been charged with executing.  The process leading up to and the execution are taken very seriously by these men preforming their duty.
Farquhar on the other hand refuses to accept his fate and "take things seriously", so it is following this quote that we begin a sort of fantastical type journey with him.  This was his way of refusing to accept his fate.
